The site should say : they all draw just alike. The art on their site does not effect me emotionally -to me it is simply illustration. With your ART I feel an emotional connection. At this point in life if something I create does not bring me joy at some level, I don’t want to do it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and processes.

I DON'T KNOW! Where I get my ideas, that is. And the reason I don't know, is because it's not rational, or predictable. Whether writing or creating, it's a WAVE that roles into my heart and head. It's unique...and it's not necessarily "ON TREND". But, it is ME! It's what is in my heart and soul, at that very moment. I cannot summon it. I can't ask it to follow a certain pattern. I love your work, Jess. It's real. I think YOU should launch a contest with a theme, and ask us to submit our interpretations! We'd all be winners (too woke?), and we would all get to see the amazing ways our individual minds work. I'll bet the "winning" entries wouldn't look alike at all! Yay for that. Love you sister!

Your work is an “art” piece that calls for the viewer to interpret it. The others are “illustration” that tell the viewer what to think or do. Big difference.

Actually, you missed your calling as a philosopher! An additional Substack perhaps? Love you!

I enjoy your writing. I find it thought provoking.

I also enjoy your art and am inspired by it. I'm very surprised they accepted some of the other pieces over yours. Good on you for doing what is right for you.

I love your gates! It is kind of amazing how similar many of the other entries were. For me, one of the beautiful things about being human is that we can develop our style in ways that are true to ourselves, even if it is very different from the mainstream. I believe it was Oscar Wilde who said something like, "Be yourself, everyone else is already taken". For me, that's good advice.

My ideas usually come to me by surprise -- in parking lots, while working out, working in the yard, etc. If I'm lucky, I have a place to write them down or draw them out!

I looked at the accepted images. Strange they didn’t advertise they were looking for cookbook illustrations. Love your gates. Looking forward to seeing your online gallery.

i looked at the page of entries for the contest, and they all look alike! i remember when that style first became popular, and back then i was quite attracted to it. but now i see those kinds of drawings and just go "ho hum" ... nothing new or exciting or even cohesive. i'm sorry your entry was rejected, because it would have definitely stood out in the crowd. love your art, always have, always will ;)
